Band: Blink 182
Album: Dude Ranch
From: Marie Thomas

Review:
Blink 182 has been one of my favorite punk bands for quite some time now,
but I didn't really quite realize their energy since seeing them live in
concert a few months ago. I live in Salt Lake City, UT and Blink 182 came to
play at the Wasatch Events Center along with MXBX. Both bands had so much
energy. When Blink 182 came on, the whole crowd became one big mosh pit,
instead of just a small ring of people up towards the front. They played most
of their songs from their latest album, Dude Ranch.

Review:
same repetitve moping sounds, rhythms, etc over
and over. personal style is very important,
but not good if it's boring. the band is in
a rut and needs to get out and try something
new. ultra doesn't do it.
Band: Depeche Mode
Album: Ultra

Review:
What can be said about Ultra. Depeche Mode, synth's answer to U2 (possibly
the only band bigger than DM globally) has produced yet another fine album.
Ultra is fantastic. Martin Gore's lyrics have a way of moving me like nobody
else's can and Ultra just heightens this experience for me. I am one of
the few people who REALLY liked Barrel of a Gun. The Love Thieves, with
it's amazing lyrics (Martin's best, to date) is a great piece that keeps
getting better with each listen. Home is a beautiful song. Almost as
beautiful as the classic, One Caress. It's No Good is Depeche Mode at it's
best and really sounds great if you have a good stereo system. Useless is
my personal favorite of songs on the album. The funky bassline provided by
ex-Living Colour member Doug Wimbish is excellent while the cool, bluesy
guitar riff make this song a must listen. Sister of Night is your classic
Depeche Mode. Moving, powerful chorus and a great performance by Dave
Gahan, who's voice is still unmatched in the pop world. Freestate is anther
great tune that is in heavy rotation in my cd player. I love the bluesy
feel of most of DM's latest work and this is another example. The lyrics
seem to be about Dave although Martin denies writing any lyrics for
Dave. The Bottom Line is a Martin-sung slow-tempo piece that has a sort of
ambient quality. This ambient influnce is evident throughout the album
courtesy of Tim Simenon, the producer who did an excellent job on
ULTRA. Insight is a great song that gets better wth each listen. It is as
powerful as the stuff on SOFAD and has a great chorus. I especially love
the ending with Marting singing "You gotta give love" as the song fades
out. Although I am not a fan of the instrumetal pieces on the
album (throw-ins, in my opinion) , ULTRA goes in the same direction started
with 1993's beautiful Songs of Faith and Devotion and gives it a new,
more electronic feel. Depeche Mode is a great band that make great records
and if Martin Gore's songs don't convine you, maybe Dave Gahan's
incredible voice will.
10/10.
Band: Depeche Mode

Album: Violator
Review:
Violator is the best selling Depeche Mode album. Why? Because it
has the most popular songs on it. I refuse to be one of those people who
judges something on how popular it is. I love this album. It is fresh
and rockin. You find yourself singing along, and knowing many of the songs.
One reason I like this album more than other DM albums I've heard is
because I know the songs. Although I would like to experience all of
DM's albums, it's hard to listen to something that I'm not familiar
with. This album really stands out to me because it doesn't have
"Everything Counts" on it (a song that seems to be on just about every DM
album). This album has been compared to Ultra and I highly recommend it.
This is a great album for anyone who loves the 80's.
Band: NOFX
Album: ALL
From: Mr. Pesky Joe
Date: 11 January, 1999
Review:
In my mind NOFX is the best band around today, they have been together
since the early eightees and have put out numerous albums, 7"'s, and have
been featured on compilations. But you can never give your true opinion
about a band untill you have seen them live. Well not too long ago in a
small town named Irvine in California i experinced a great show. It was
the 1998 Warped Tour and i went for one reason and one reason only NOFX.
I had seen them before about four months earlier at the palace but this
looked to be better than the palace show. After watching lots of bands
tear up the numerous stages that were there the time finally came to
witness what i was waiting for the second i got my ticket, well as i was
walking towards the main stage my chin almost dropped to the ground when
i saw the number of people awaiting NOFX but at this time THE REVEREND
HORTON HEAT was on stage i knew i din't have much time to get to the
front, i had to think of something fast.
I noticed that there was a long
line of venders along the sides of this massive crowd. I sneeked around
the back of these vendors and walked my way past all the people okay now i
was up front but no where near the stage i had to move sideways now i
slowly moved my way towards the pit and had to pit i then stopped pitting
and stood with the crowd pushing my way through at this time i felt faint
but i didnt care because i didn't have much time. I finally got to the
front and not too long after NOFX took the stage. They started their set
with DAY TO DAZE a track from S&M Airlines an unexpected song but a good
one. The crowd was going they were playing with lots of energy. They
played TOGETHER ON THE SAND and follwed it with DON'T CALL ME WHITE i was
expecting nowhere which is what they usually do. I got some great pictures
of the band jumoing around and doing their stuff my body had taken a
pounding from being pushed against the metal rail in front of me but i
didn't feel a thing because i was having a great time NOFX did an
excellent job that day and!
Hey i got a few pictures, mikes song list and a couple of bruised ribs all
in all it was a great day.
Band: Intra Moenia
Album: Spitting in the Mirror
From: Deb
Date: 16 October, 1998
Review:
Now that so much of the mainstream music is sounding the same
you can imagine my surprise when I stumbled onto one
of the best bands I've heard in years. It was at a college show featuring
a couple of signed Canadian bands and one complete unknown,Intra Moenia.
Needless to say it was a shock to everyone when the opening act graced the stage
with a show that would rival anything I've ever seen, demolishing the other
featured
bands and leaving the crowd chanting a name that noone had heard of before.
It took me almost three month's to get a hold of the CD, but it was well worth
waiting for.
From the opening song to the last track I have never experienced such a
diverse,eclectic and powerfulalbum.
How long a band of this magnitude can stay a secret I cannot say, but I know
that until they achieve
stardom the world of muisc will be a little less enthralling, and lacking a
major building block.
