“We are a rock and roll band. We love drinking, smoking, and women,” proclaimed Robert Pollard, too drunk to stand on both feet without falling to the side. Although many bands make the same contention, very few can back it up. However, indie-rock heroes Guided by Voices proved on Tuesday night at the Factory in Ft. Lauderdale, that they not only play rock and roll, but they live it, as well.

“About half an hour after Superdrag finished their 45 minute long set, Guided by Voices took the stage accompanied by a two page set list, a blue cooler full of ice and Miller Lite bottles, numerous packs of Camel Lights and three large Jack Daniel bottles. Throughout their performance, barely legal girls approached the side of the stage with six packs of beer for guitarist Nate Farley and bassist Tim Tobias, hoping to get more than a ‘thank you’ smile. In the meantime, Pollard kicked, stumbled, and swung the microphone, while drummer Kevin March and guitarist Doug Gillard adopted a more laid back and serious attitude.

“ The assorted crowd in the packed venue seemed to enjoy every minute of the distinctively long two hour and 40 minute set, which included songs from most of their numerous EPs and LPs. Except for a short intermission break and a couple of witty remarks made by Pollard, Guided by Voices played one song after the next without stopping in between and with remarkable fervor. By the time they left the stage, the cigarette packs, the Jack Daniel bottles and the blue cooler were empty.
